    Picture shows up on shutdown

    Locked

    by dlcdjm ·

My compaq nc6220 shows an old picture on the screen when the computer shuts down. This picture used to be my wallpaper but it was deleted years ago. Now when I shut off the computer and after the windows screen disappears that says windows is shutting down, this old deleted picture shows up and stays on the screen until the laptop powers off. How do I delete this already deleted picture that I can’t find anywhere on the computer. GHOST????? Please advise.

A couple of thing to try

      Open Regedt32 and navigate to:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Delete the values for the old wallpaper if they exist.

Right click on a blank space on the Desktop and select properties, Desktop and Customize Desktop. Click on Web and make sure that everything is unticked.

        They’re in WEB, I think…

Those pictures you see as part of a desktop background on startup and shutdown are indeed located in the WEB settings of the desktop.

Now, there’s also a Windows Logo screen which preceeds and follows these and used to be called logo.sys (startup) and logos.sys (shutdown). These are usually hidden system files though. If all the OP is talking about is a brief view of the picture after the desktop disappears and before the ‘windows is shutting down’ screen, it’s definitely not the logos.sys file. It’s in the WEB.

I used to see this often

in Win98 but it is awhile since I have seen it and I am in need of a Memory upgrade. Maybe the OP will let us know what has worked.

I still see it, on occation….

I’ve seen all kinds of things flashed at me when starting up/shutting down other people’s WinXP PC’s, from porn to old girl friends to cartoons. In fact, I had to remove an old girlfriend in a pretty revealing pose, if you get my drift, from my Son’s computer just this last week. :0 Too bad he’s 20, or I’d spank him! 😉

Usually, people are too embarrassed to admit they ever put that stuff on their computer in the first place, but want it removed none the less. I guess they thought it was cute at the time they put it on and now don’t know how to get rid of it. :_|

I’ve seen some sights over the years and someone else normally gets the blame. Having three boys of my own to edificate was an interesting experience. They are all over twenty one now so they can virtually do as they please, on their own equipment. 😉

          Try this

          In reply to Still there

Logon as the default user and check to see if the background is set in that environment.

          Still not fixed

          In reply to Try this

Tried all suggestions and still there. FYI the pix that is showing up is an old background image I had before i installed a new one and deleted the old background from the computer. This is quite puzzling. It not a bad picture more annoying than anything.

This is how I found mine.

I had a similar problem, I accidently deleted the picture I used as background image and noticed it glimpsed by when I shut the computer off. I searched the register for the name of the original picture and found it…

The picture you added was converted into .bmp and saved elsewhere, this picture is still apparently still there.

          Check registry:
          HKEY_CURRENT_USER
          Control Panel
          Desktop

Under “ConvertedWallpaper” you’ll find the file location where the now deleted picture was.

Under “OriginalWallpaper” is where you find the file location where the converted picture is.

There’s also “Wallpaper” if the picture is not in the above location it might be there…

I’d simply delete the .bmp-file and the problem should be solved. You can probably delete the information in the key to get rid of it.

          Good luck.
