Two main things that could have happened here

by OH Smeg In reply to Pls Help...My Seagate Fre ...

The first is that the End User isn't using the Safely Remove Option Under Windows on the Task Bad on the Lower Right Rand side so the Partition tables have been corrupted.

To check if this is the case open the Drive Management and see if the System insists that you Format the Drive. If it does you need to think about the contents of this drive. If the data is Important you need to send it to a Professional Data Recovery Service and pay them to recover your Data. If it would only be Nice to get the Data back you can try a Chkdsk/r on the Drive from the Command Prompt and it may repair the Partition Tables. If it doesn't you'll need to first test the drive with it's makers Testing Utility listed below and then use a Data Recovery program of some sort on it also in the below list.

Second Option is that the External Drive is left in all of the time or at least a lot of the time. These Devices are not meant for use 100% of the time so they should not be used that way. They overheat and shorten the life of the HDD inside the enclosure. They are also far more susceptible to Vibrational Damage than HDD inside computers.

To check if that is the problem get yourself a copy of FreeAgent Pro Tools Utilities - Performing Drive Diagnostics for your Drive from Seagate here

The last easy thing is that the USB Lead has failed because of kinks, bends or being pulled out of the USB Ports and needs replacing. If that is the case a new USB Lead will be required.

Here is a short list of the better Data Recovery Software but it is by no means a complete list of all the available software.

While the last 2 are from the same company they are very different products. Win Hex should only be considered for use by someone who knows Hex Inside Out while Davory is a great cheap General Purpose Application.

Personally I prefer the On Track Option but it's anything but cheap. However because I use this type of software a lot it's paid for itself many times over by now, for a cheaper option Spin Rite from Gibson Research or Stella have both very good reputations by other TR members.
