Policies, can I use them on an NT workst

By edrox ·
Hi,

can I use policies on a NT Workstation without it being part of an NT domain?
These are PCs which we are going to place inour shop, and I want to closethem down to guaranty more stability.

These PCs never log on to a NT or any server.

ANybody knows?

Thanks in advance,

Eduard de Vries

No, policy editor is only on NT server. You can manually edit the registry on workstation and assign permissions to individual keys.

Yes, you can.
you will have to get poledit.exe and *.adm templates from a server Resource Kit CD. Run poledit, go to file->Open registry->Local Computer and double click on it. Open Network, System Policies Update and click on Remote Update. On thebottom under Update Mode select Manual and under path type the path where policy file will reside (c:\policy\ntconfig.pol for example). Click OK go to File,Close and save it. Than go to File, New Policy and create the policy you want and save it in the path you specified in step 1. Reboot and enjoy.

Yes, you can.
1. put the PC you want to set policy on the network accessible by your workstation (that has NT resource kit 4 installed)
2. make an "administrative" connection to it (e.g. connect to \\computername\c$ with the local administrator account of the remote pc)
3. start policy editor and open the remote pc's policy.
4. Edit the policies to suit your requirements and save it.

That's all.

Well, of course you can. Let's do this is a less complex method.
Copy Common.adm and Winnt.adm files off of the NT service pack 4 CD to the machine where you are going to be building the Policies. Also copy the Poledit.exe from the Service pack to the same machine.

The Common and the Winnt adm files contain the info necessary to construct a policy.

Go to user manager and create the users that you will be building policies for. Assign the password and make them a member of the Administrators group.

After you have created your users then start poledit. Ignore any errors that you may get.
Click on Options, Policy Template. Click on Add and then go to where you copied the Common and winnt.adm files. Add them both. Then choose file. New policy.

Click on Edit, Add user. And find the user which you created using User Manager.
Click on Browse, choose the user and click on add. This will add an icon to your open window.

Then choose File, save as c:\winnt\inf\PC_pol.pol ( On a new build

Part 2
(Dang 1000 limit)
Then choose File, save as c:\winnt\inf\dopol.pol ( On a new build this is the name you will need to put in the registry) Use the naming convention of dopol.pol for Policy files. If you are doing multiple policy files then place each of them in a separate folder.

You can choose File, Close and then File, New Policy if you wish to create another new one.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Update

NetworkPath c:\winnt\inf\PC_pol.pol UpdateMode 2
