POP3 encountered error

My company's Exchange 5.5 is running on NT4 SP6a with POP enabled. I came across the following in the event viewer application log:

POP3 connection to x.x.x.x lost
Microsoft Exchange POP3 Server encountered error 0x40 sending response to the client


Can anyone tell me what has caused this and how to remedy this ?

If this message in on the Event Viewer for the client PC I would look at your email account settings on the client PC. Check the server timeout setting, if it is at 60 seconds or 1 minute increase it to 90 seconds for 1 1/2 minutes or more. Network traffic can cause delays in POP3 and SMTP traffic and this could cause the session to timeout.
