As of 2003, the most common reason you see port 135/udp is because of WinPopup/Messenger spam. This is a feature in Windows that allows system administrators to notify employees of unusual events, such as the network or file servers about to be rebooted. However, spammers have found a way to subvert this and use this mechanism to send popup messages on the victim's desktop.

http://www.popup-killer.info/messenger-spam/

These 4 easy steps will turn off the messenger service used to send messenger service popup ads. The Messenger service is not related to Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger.:

1) Go to Start, then Run and type in services.msc Click Ok

2) Scroll to Messenger, select it, right click it and choose Properties.

3) Under startup choose "Disabled", then choose Stop.

4) When stopped, click Ok.
