When you lock your system check your processes, see if powerpnt.exe is running.

Disable your screensaver - maybe there is some strange image association that is making powerpoint try to launch a screensaver (and fail).

Go to a command prompt and click run and msconfig press ok. Check in the startup tab that powerpoint doesn't launch (be careful in here what you uncheck).

It's possible this is malware/spyware related run adaware (at www.lavasoft.de).

If all else fails download and run "hijack this" and see what is calling powerpoint to run.

You did all of these steps in ten minutes?

It would also be useful to have some feedback on anything that any of the steps (the one's you tried at least) gave you. At least for anyone else who works to assist you on this.

I'm out. Good luck.

Is it possible that powerpoint is associated with a file and the OS tries to use it to launch something than PP crashes.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307859&product=winxp

See if this works.

I?m 99% sure is an infection, because the error message that you describe is not an OS or PowerPoint error message. The right error message must be "powerpoint has performed an illegal operation". So try to boot clean and perform an AV scan.

Can you provide more details please?
- What OS?
- What DO you have open when you lock your computer? and what do you have running the background?
- Do you have more than one User Account enabled on that computer?
- Do you know if Fast User Switching is enabled?
- Is the Guest account enabled?
- Do you have all the Office 2000 service packs (1, 2, and 3) installed?

Try uninstalling Powerpoint then attempt locking your computer and let us know if the error still occurs.
