Prejudice Towards Military

By IT & Telecom Guy ·
My boss (and place of business) do not like to hire the military. I have witnessed many acts of prejudice against veteran's where I work. Three exapmles; 1). I am a 20+ year Armed Forces veteran and when I went to my much younger boss to justify why I thought I deserved a raise, he mentioned that I had a monthly retirement check, therfore I wasn't a needy as others in department. 2). A coworker who is a Guard member was called to active duty to support the war with Iraq for 6 months. They gave his job to someone else. When he returned they gave him an "equal" job that noone wanted and could not keep filled (he later left the buisiness). 3). A coworker who is also Guard had to serve his active traing committment. Since his return, he's been harassed by co-workers about his "vacation" and his boss told him he would never hire another military member.
Does anyone else have a boss that's hostile towards the military?

That is disgusting... Bosses like that are the soft type that need to get thier asses kicked in order to realize the work you guys put in. Its sad to see how veterans of war put thier life on the line for our country and little or no respect in thier own back yards.... Sad... I give the utmost respect to war veterans and feel that you should report this type of activity to someone who can do something big about it. I think from what you just said, your boss could not only be fired, but that company could be sued....

This question probably belongs in the discussion center not the Technical Q&A.

I am Canadian, but I have worked in companies with US offices, and in all cases, they were very accomodating to the military. During the first Gulf War, many people had to leave, but when they came back they returned to their old positions.

Some IT companies actively look for ex military to hire as consultants. The thinking is that ex officers can work independantly and can be trained up as consultants easily.

I'd be looking elsewhere, if they dislike the military, perhaps they aren't the best employer for the rest of their employees either.

OMG! That's horrible! And I think that #2 is illegal! People who have to serve in a military reserve capacity are supposed to have their jobs be held for them when they return. I don't think you can be given a different job when you return. I'm not certain on this one, though.

#1 is harassment, plain and simple.

#3 is in poor taste, but I don't think it's illegal; just stupid people being stupid!

You know what I think I would do? You and your fellow military members should contact a local television reporter, and tell your stories! Get the press on the rear ends of these people! This is just sick!

Since you put this question in Q&A, then I have a suggestion. Increase the point total for this to 10000+ points, to get it to the Top 5. I think that people need to read what is happening to you and your co-workers.
I'm gonna open a question for you, and I'll put in 20K of points, so you can use them for this question to increase its points. This topic needs to be seen and discussed.

Ok, I put the points up on another open question for you. Just post a comment to that one, then I will close it out and assign the points to you.
Then you can take them and add them to this quesion.
Then we'll see what folks say!

You boss sounds as though he is one who's father was a war dodger or from a third world country, who befittingly shows his ignorance by using his fathers ideas why he should not join the military and it is blatant discrimination for him to do this, otherwise he is just a jeep with very little understanding of life, yet he benefits from the vets willing to do a job that should be reported for these acts.
