Preparation for a Civilian Job?

By aarocars ·
Hello, everyone!

First, a quick disclaimer: while I have browsed Tech Republic for some time, this is my first time visiting/using the forum. If this question does not belong here, please let me know, and I will promptly remove it.

I am currently an active duty military IT, and in about a year, I'll be leaving the military to pursue a career in the civilian IT world. I'm hoping for some advice and insight from IT professionals in civilian positions.

I have a bachelor's degree in Information Technology, seven years military experience, five years IT experience (telephony, system/network administrator, hardware, and more), and Net and Sec certifications.

My question to all of you IT pros is this: what can I do to make myself marketable in the civilian world? What type of positions are available for me? Is my military experience worth anything? Would you recommend I get more certifications? Are there any tips to getting a good job in the field?

I'm sure these questions have been asked thousands of times in hundreds of ways, but I'd really like to get some personal insight on my situation.

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to your guidance!
