prevent installation of instant messagin

By knelson ·
In our student labs, we have every possible variety of instant messaging software downloaded and installed by students. We would prefer NOT to allow students to do this, but haven't yet found a way to prevent instant messaging apps from being installed on NT 4.0 and Win95 workstations. I'd really like to include this "block" as part of our custom Internet Explorer install.
Any ideas?

Install a proxy server between the lab and the outside, and block the ports being used by instant messaging.

There is a registry hack that will stop certain NT groups from installing/uninstalling ANY apps. Open regedt32.

The keys are HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Choose these keys, go to Options...Security and change "Everyone" permissions to read.

This should help all around.

Be careful with the registry permissions. It can cause problems if you use logon scripts to perform automated/install tasks.

In a lab environment it might make sense to use the ZAK policy (.adm) that only allows certain exe's to run. It's a pain because you have to specify all that CAN run. But my guess is that you would want to lock-down a lab like that.

If you are only woried abou IM software, this is not a solution for you, but if your problem is any software installations, read on. I am in the same boat, I have 7 different labs at a university. I am testing a solution that is extremely promissing. It is the Centurion Guard.

You use a key to enable and disable the guard. When enabled, the user can do what ever they want to the machine; however, when the computer reboots it is exactly how it was left right before you enabled the guard. It allows the user to do what ever they want, but gives you a clean machine every boot. I have been testing it for two weeks, I have not found a problem yet. To upgrade or install software, simply turn the key and reboot. Hope this helps.
