printer problems

By bf ·
Hi,
I run a PDC with Windows NT 4.0, which contains about 25 HP printers, (HP 8000 series, HP 5 series, and HP 4000 series)running with HP Jetdirect print server cards. Everything works fine, except for once every three or four days, none of the printers will print except for the 8000 series. I have to stop the spooler service, and restart it. This works, but it is a temporary fix. What could be causing this problem, and how can it be resolved?
Thanks in Advance..

You might want to search for updated drivers for your printers. That's the first tought.
Perhaps, spliting the load with another NT machine would help.
Then there is the issue of reliability of the server. You might consider checking the server (SP re-install?, a scheduled re-boot every 15 days or so).
Finaly, HP has a free software, and I hope you're using it call HPWebAdmin. It allows you to manage every HP machine locally from one point.

Good luck!

You don't mention how the printers are configured and what type of ports you are using - LPR, DLC or HP JetDirect ports. My experience is that the HP JetDirect ports, esp. with the latest software and firmware upgrades, are more reliable, despite what MS says about its TCP/IP printing services. If you are using MS TCP/IP svcs., you want to be sure you've installed the latest services packs, at least. Also on the printers be sure you are using the latest drivers and firmware - particularly the older printers such as the 5 series. Hope this helps!

in your printer server properties(file/server properties), go the advanced tab and find where you're spool folder is located. if it's on your boot partition, move it to a different NTFS partition, one not containing the paging file, too. also, clean out the spool folder. sometimes, it'll be filled with tmp files and old spl files.

Check for size of Hard drive where spooler is .do you have user printing graphics .
Try to increase size of hard drive or put more memory on printer

Try some of the following:

1. Install/upgrade to the current drivers for your HP printers
2. Try using a different printer "port" (DLC, TCP/IP, JetDirect)
3. Ensure you have the latest NT service packs
4. Lastly, verify that you aren't running out of disk space on your Spooler HDD

Also, for good measure, download the latest JetDirect firmware for your respective JetDirect cards. While it may not directly impact your problems, the later versions add some nice functionality with NT. Examples include registering with your WINS server and allowing management via a Webbrowser.

Hope this helps out...
