Printer Sharing Issue

By mrgy05 ·
Hey guys, I'm a new member so bare with me.

I'm having problems networking a printer in an office I'm working at, ran off simple router no more than 5 computers are connected at a time to a main workstation which is then connected to 2 shared printers. Once sharing and confirming the domain name, all the PCs have been able to connect to the printers except for one laptop, which only connects to the printers when I through workgroup and connect manually (entering in the username and password) then I have access to the printers.

I assume I could remove the password protection on the main computer which is connected to the printers to resolve the problem, but I the other PCs are not having the problem so I don't think that's a good workaround.

To confirm, I HAVE enabled guest access to the main PC, confirmed all file and printer sharing, confirmed port access, confirmed that all PCs can ping each other, and bypassed firewall.

What am I missing?

Sort of Confused

by LarryD4 In reply to Printer Sharing Issue

I'm sort of confused, is this a network that uses Active Directory or just a workgroup? Your statement,

"which only connects to the printers when I through workgroup and connect manually (entering in the username and password) then I have access to the printers.",

leads me to beleave you are flip flopping from wourgroup to windows domain management.

Workgroup is my goal

by mrgy05 In reply to Sort of Confused

I've never worked with domain sharing, so I wanted to keep things simple and just share off of a workgroup. I've switched all the computers over to the same workgroup, but if some settings are wrong on this one PC that is having problems, could it be trying to connect domain as well? How would I go along fixing this?

Thanks so much for the reply!

Ok

Ok, no domain just a workgroup and you want the laptop to print to the printer without having to go through network explorer.

Be sure the username that the laptop uses, is setup as a user on the PC sharing the printer.

In other words if "LaptopUser" is the name the laptop uses at startup, do you have a duplicate username account on the PC thats hosting the printer?

I don't think so

"Be sure the username that the laptop uses, is setup as a user on the PC sharing the printer."

How would I go along doing this? I don't believe that there is a duplicate username on the host computer (the one the printers are connected to) that is like the laptops. Is there a setting I need to change to allow the laptops username access permanently?

I hope this fixes it!

re: Adding a user...

by ThumbsUp2 In reply to I don't think so

Walk over to the computer which has the printers attached, log on as the Administrator, go to Control Panel/Users and add a new user with the same login name and password used on the laptop that can't connect, log off as the Administrator.

You DO have Administrator access to it, right?

So what you are saying is that you can connect to the printer(s).

If you can access the printer(s) in question, what seams to be the problem?.
If you try and change the network, you will have more problems (or errors). You can make your laptop to auto-connect when on the same network, but you will have to tick a box so as to save the password and user name.

Please post back if you have any more problems or questions.
If this info is useful, please mark it helpful. Thanks

Tick a box sounds nice

by mrgy05 In reply to So what you are saying is ...

They all connect and print to the printers except for one laptop in question. I have to initially connect through the workgroup explorer to gain access to the printers, if not I'll try to print and it says that I do not have access to the printers. Is there (or where is) a tick box that saves the username / password for the host computer?

Thanks so much!
