Printing problems in Word 2000

Our company produces editable manuals in word format. The problem we have ran into is that when a client opens the manual in Word, it reformats the document for their specific printer. This throws off the document format. We are trying to find a solution that will allow us to produce the manuals, allow the clients to edit them yet maintain the original format. Any ideas or suggestions?
