Priv.edb needs moving - how ?

By martinr ·
We have Exchange 5.5 running on an NT Server. The application is currently running on our c: drive and the priv.edb is on our d: drive and running out of space. However we have lots of space on our e: drive.

Can we export or copy the priv.edband what are the pitfalls and ways to do it?

Any help would be most appreciated

Priv.edb needs moving - how ?

Yes, you can change the location of your information stores.

Use the Exchange Performance Optimizer. This tool will allow you to change the location of information stores as well as log files. This is the ONLY error-free way to move databases other than maybe some third-party software.

If you try to move the databases manually, you run the very real chance of corrupting your Exchange installation beyond repair.

As with any other architecture change of this magnitude, make sure you have a GOOD backup before attemting this procedure. Although the procedure is fairly simple (you merely tell the Optimizer where you want the databases to reside and it does the rest), bad things can happen (power outage, hard drive crash, etc.). Therefore, better safe than sorry!

Good luck.

I agree with answer one. Our mail system out grew some 7.5gb ide drives. So we had to move to ext scsi. Exchange 5.5 admin tools allows you to move the locations of both the exchange stores and logs files. It only requires that the Store is running and you are not in a hurry. Our move of 7gb took over 1.5hrs to move and the store is taken offline to do the move.
