Problem changing Product Key XP Pro. (sp1 with sp2 key)

By andrew ·
ok... try to follow me with this one. Our systems are individual Lic. But one was badly hacked (guy runs too much unprotected p2p stuff.) That being said he was advised to do a clean install of XP but did not do a back up. Well he couldn't find his valid CD of XP Pro sp2. He did find a "back-up" of a SP1 with a VLK lic. So installed it without activating. When I got into the office I took over the disaster and called in to change the key and activate. Did and all seemed well till it booted me to the USER menu. I logged in and the "you evaluation time is expired and you have to activate this software to continue to use this copy" warning came up. I clicked Activate now and then the activation window came up and said, "this product already activated". Then I clicked the ok button at the bottom. It turfed me back to the USER menu and the cycle continued endlessly.

Sooooo I decided to do a repair install to clear it up(read about this issue online and got this option). But when it asked me for the product key again I enterd the new valid one and came back as a "no go". So I entered the old VLK number and let me through. I began to install the updates but when WGA did it's thing it said "not a valid copy"..etc... So I tried to use the activation gui to change the key to the new one again but it said this key is already in use and cannot be entered. HELP!!!! I got a broader Catch 22. I can use it but WGA refuses to acknowledge the system. Is there any way to get the key into the system without rejection and without the CD (as it is still los). Microsoft wanted me to switch to tech support for XP and charge me $59.
