I use the new Vista Basic system, and I have noticed that certain keys on the keyboard do not display the same charachters on the screen that are on the keys. Now I know what your probably thinking… Its just the language chosen, change it. Well, I checked the language, and its not the problem… infact the problem persists in every (English) language given on my vista system. So I checked if the keyboard was malfunctioning… I diagnosed the keyboards function on the computer I have with the Vista system, its reply was… the keyboard was functioning properly. Then I took the keyboard and connected it to my Win 2000 comp, my Win Xp com, my Win 98 comp… etc. and it worked fine. Yet, on the vista whether I type in office 2007, or in my email, notepad etc. The problem persists, and with only certain keys.
The question mark, aquired by using the shift key and the key with the question mark, gives this… ( ? )
If I want the slash on the same key, it gives this… ( ? )
For the hyphen it gives this… ( ? )
For the quotation marks it gives this… ( ? )
For the Less Than Symbol, it gives this… ( ‘ )
But the colin mark on the same key works fine.
For the Greater Than Symbol, it gives this… ( ” ) which I think is the quotation mark… shaded
But the period on the same key works fine.
The square brackets… Left – ( ^ ), and Right – ( ? ), show up as follows, with the exception that for the left bracket, I have to hit the key twice, if I hit it just once, nothing shows.
For the above brackets… Left – ( ?? ), and Right – ( ? ), show up as follows, and the same exception again with the left bracket, I have to hit it twice or I get nothing at all. ( These are the brackets above the square brackets, on the same keys ).
The slash key to the right of those bracket keys displays this… In lower case – ( ? ), and In upper case – ( ? ).
The key below the escape key labled ( Esc ), gives this… In lower case – ( / ), and In upper case – ( \ ), not what is shown on the key.
The key that has the number 6, in upper case, gives the… ( ? ), instead of the upward triangle, as for the keys… 1 2 3 4 5 7 8 9 0, all there upper cases show the symbole that are labeled on them.
As far as I know, I have not been infected with a virus… besides, the keys acted that way when I first recieved my computer.
I WENT TO THE MICROSOFT SITE FOR HELP ON THE ISSUE AND FOUND NO INFO FOR MY DILEMA, SO WHEN I WENT TO TRY SUPPORT SERVICES, I FIND OUT THAT YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR MICROSOFT SUPPORT.
My question comes down to this…
First… how do I resolve this issue with keys giving wrong charachters?
And Second… Why does anyone have to pay Microsoft tech support… to help fix a problem, if no fix to the problem issue caused by the vista software can be found in the vista help files, or on the Microsoft site, and that it is the vista software, which is causing the problem?
