Problem with .dat files

By n.singer ·
I have just discoverd that all my .dat files have become files of type:

neroshowtime.files7.dat files.

Can I recover the original file?
Is this some sort of malware?
What can I do about this?

I have completely un-installed Nero8 with no effect.

Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated

There is nothing wrong here

by OH Smeg In reply to Problem with .dat files

All that is happening here is that you have Nero CD/DVD Recording software installed and your default Video Player is Showtime. If you change your default Video Player to Media Player the files will show a different Icon and list of the Default Videos Player but nothing else will change.

You can still play these files in whatever Application you chose without a problem but if you open the Folder that they are in and click on them Nero Showtime will open and play them.

So in answer to your questions

Can I recover the original file?

You don't need to all that has changed here is the player that they default to.

Is this some sort of malware?

No it's not anything at all. Don't concern yourself over this.

What can I do about this?

If you don't like the way that these are displayed remove Nero or change the Default Video Player to something else.

Many thanks for your suggestion.

Unfortunately, none of the .dat files affected are files that will play. They appear to be installation files related to applications. Also, I have never set Nero as the default player.

Does this lead to any further thoughts on the matter?

Did you look at the Process when it Installed?

by OH Smeg In reply to .dat files

By Default Nero sets it's Showtime as the Default Media Player.

If they are Application Files they are not supposed to play on anything but run when what they support opens. just leave them alone and they will be happy.

Open one of the other Media Players that you may have installed and set that to the Default Media Player that will make the files show differently but otherwise make no difference.

You could always try Nero Clean Tool Bundle

by OH Smeg In reply to .dat files

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Nero-Clean-Tool-Bundle.shtml

This is supposed to completely remove Nero which the Uninstall Option doesn't.

Are all these cuplprit .dat files multimedia files?

How were you accessing your files with no difficulty before this issue?

You might have to change the current default application ffor accessing your .dat to the old application
