Problem with Kazaa and my daughter

By julioairizar ·
Have 3 PC, two my and the 3er my daughter's PC. She installed Kazaa and all the time comsume all the bandwide of the ADSL connection in that way that I can't practically check my mail. All 3 PC are configured to connect to the Internet directly and the OS is Windows XP. I don't want to uninstall Kazaa from her PC in plan to avoid conflict. Is any way (reconfiguring the network, etc) that I can control from my PC how much bandwide she consume with KaZaa and reduce when is to much? In other words, is a way that I can control her PC from my without her knowing what I doing?
Thank!!

Read this and determine whether or not you still want kazaa on her computer. There are other music/download sharing sites that do not do this:

Kazaa removal instructions:

Have her use BearShare or any of the others available for this sharing.

Thanks, I already know a few things about KaZaa, the problem is that for the moment I can not to convince her about removing KaZaa. I said she is my daughter, but in fact she is my wife's daughter and is teenage, so you can imaging that is not easy thing, although I dont have a bad relationship with her. That's why I was looking for a way to control her PC from my.

See if she'll compromize with you and stop sharing the files she downloads. You can sety Kazaa to not share with anyone. Even if your ADSL is a super fast download, applications that bog down the upload speed will affect your general network performance...

Kazaa has a bandwidth throttle for uploads [which is probably causing your problems]. Since you know about kazaa you've probably modified the bandwidth available. If not, open Kazaa. In the task bard click on tools, then options. Next click on the advanced tab. Once the advanced tab is open, check the box, "do not use as a supernode". Next adjust the maximum bandwidth to use for sharing files with other Kazaa users. I use 64Kps. uncheck the box "Use Maximum Bandwidth when computer is idle" box.

You CAN purchase a Cable/DSL router and configure it to block all inbound/outbound port traffic to Kazaa or limit your daughters access to specific days and times. Linksys BEFSX41 Cable/DLS router with a 4 port switch has such capabilities. Instead of all you computers connecting to the internet via your computer, they would use the router. Since the router has user name and password security, you can control the other PC's network activity.
Further, your daughter can just request what songs she wants to download, just leave her computer running and at 1am when the router allows her computer traffic, the downloads starts. When the router disallows traffic, Kazaa will automatically pause the download until a connection.

is made again. Further, using a Router with a highspeed switch, you'll have two advantages. First is a move over to a 10/100 Ethernet based network in lieu of using crossover cables. This will substantially increase your network traffic times. Second is the high speed switch directs traffic to a specific destination [your daughter's IP address] whereas your current setup does not have high speed switching capabilities.

The $90.00 spent on a Cable/DSL router which will allow all users to utilize the internet and not cause network traffic bottlenecks [hense slow down] is a small price for domestic harmony [specially when the domestic harmon involves teenages].
