Problem with System Hang in Office 2003

By BrandonW ·
This is happening on 3 different machines in my organization:

System hangs during the following actions:

1)When using the File-->Open menu in Office 2003, and then trying to open a subfolder in the default directory
2) Using Insert File option in Outlook 2003, cannot open a subfolder past the default directory
3) When trying to Send to Mail Recipient from the right-click menu in Windows Explorer (Here I also get the "Operation Failed" error
4) Using File Save As and trying to open a subfolder to save a document

All PCs are Windows XP using Office 2003. NAV Corp Edition 8.0 is installed, or Symantec Client Security 2.0.

Here's what I've tried:
Office installation repair/reinstall
Clean install of Office 2003
Ran Office Updates
Ran Windows Updates
Spybot and Ad-Aware scan from safe mode
Anti-virus update and scan

Im out of ideas. Can anyone help?

Had a similar issue and it turned out to be either too many network drives mapped in one case, some users had 18 netowrk drives mapped to 4 different servers.

The second time i had similar issues again the resolution was to remove network drives mapped to data/folders/servers which no longer existed.

Try creating a new user (windows) profile.

In XP, browse to C:\Documents and Settings\
Copy the folder for the user up to the root of C then delete the folder
(or delete the user under System Properties (Right-click My
computer->Properties - User Tab)

Log onto the PC as the user, windows will create a new profile. Copy the
favorites/documents/etc. back to the folder from your backup on the C: drive.

You're using a pretty old version of Symantec AntiVirus. Try turning off SAV on the PC and check if it works. I've had too many problems with SAV messing things up.

Your problem might be because of a security update to XP that affects systems having HP's "SHARE TO WEB" software or using HP scaners and printers. Here is a link from Microsoft that give s you the fix. I had simular problem and this took care of it .http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165
