Problems with Printer connection on Windows XP Home

By im_unowen ·
I recently upgraded the OS on my home PC (Dell Dimension) from Windows Me to Windows XP Home. I performed a clean install. Now I am not able to get my printer (HP Deskjet 895Cse) working. The sequence of events is as follows:

1. Printer connected to the system using Parallel cable
2. Run Add Printer wizard from Control Panel
3. Plug and Play printer was not recognized
4. Manually selected the printer and installed the drivers from Windows XP
5. Test page does not print
6. Changed printer settings to Print Directly to Printer instead of spooling
7. Test page still does not print
8. Created a document in Notepad and tried to print that. It does not print.
9. Tried to print from Command Prompt (Dir > LPT1). Still does not print.
10. Tried to troubleshoot the parallel port from XP Device Manager. It says the port is working fine.
11. Connected the printer (using the same cable) to a friend's system (also running XP Home) and the printer works fine.

Can anyone give me some ideas on what I can try next?

Thank you & appreciate your inputs.

Chipset drivers

Make sure that you have your dell drivers for the motherboard to work with xp and not the default microsoft drivers.Right click on the printer in your printers and faxes and select properties.Hit the ports tab.Make sure the lpt1 port is selected as sometimes xp will put in the wrong port.
