Program path error

Recently one of my users had a problem with a an error "(Null) Specified path does not exist. Check path and try again". We were able to fix, or so we thought. This morning it appeared again. So we tried the fix that we used the first time, but this time it didn't work. Initally it was said on the solution that it was related to a Windows update. Now what is going on is when we opened Task Manager we seen multiply instances of the same programs opened. We shut down the duplicate programs, still nothing. We then closed out all of the programs running then tried to open them with the same results. Then we rebooted the machine, same thing. What is going on so far is that after the reboot we tried to open Word, Excel, Outlook, Zoomtext, Adobe Acrobat Reader, etc... they are being shown as opened under Task Manager, but still pops up that error message. The machine is running Win Xp SP2 with full updates, and Office XP with full updates. Can anyone shed some light on a true fix for this problem?

This might be the answer to your problem. But not the cure.

I greatly appreciate the help there. I know it wasn't a fix, but the info might help steer me into looking more deeper than what we have been doing. I never realized how deep that type of exploit has gotten. I will post if I find a fix short of just saying just reformat and any additional info that will be useful.
