    Project Staffing Requirements

I am in the process of creating project staffing requirements for a large database project. Has anyone heard of a “rule of thumb” for what percentage of Technical Writers to Programmers/developers should be used on a large complex project. Or, approximately how many Technical Writers are there and how many Programmers/Developers are there in your company?

This really depends more on the size and complexity of the project than on a ratio of Writers to Developers. It will also depend on the scope of the project developers – is it completely modular, or is there a lot of overlap? It could also depend onthe time frame for completion of the documentation.

I know of no rule of thumb for this ratio. I would imagine that you could get by with quite a few developers per tech writer. As the project goes on, you can add more resources in this area. One area that is often skimped on is QA. I would recommendno more than 3 developers per QA person, but this changes from application to application.

Sorry, I cannot lead you any further. In all likelihood, unless you are documenting the entire source using tech writers, you will not need too many. You will need a basic explanation of the business and data tiers, with most documentation on the user interface. This could change depending on the type of project and how much documentation you need your tech writing team to produce for the engine, rather than the UI.
