[Q] Ex2K - can't send email

By dhuynh ·
HELP!

Exchange 2000 is working great, except when I try to send out email to a domain that only have an MX record and not an A record, it get bounce back right away. I called MS pay-per-incident, and they were not help. I called my ISP thinkingit's a DNS problem, but they said it wasn't there problem because everything looks good on their eng. Anyone have any suggestion?

Thanks,
Danny

[Q] Ex2K - can't send email

Exchange queries DNS looking for the MX record. An MX record holds the email domain and the host name of the server to send the email to. Exchange queries DNS for the host record of that server (usally an A record or cname). It then sends the email via SMTP to that server's IP address.
Without a way to find an IP address for the email domain, email gets bumped.
Email routing cannot work with only an MX record.

I'm not sure if that's true... because I can send email to those domain from Exchange 5.5, yahoo, hotmail. It just doesn't work from our new Ex2K server.

Thanks for the input thought! :)

Have you created an SMTP connector for the routing group?
For the **** of it I did an nslookup on MX records for yahoo.com and hotmail.com. Each has 5-6 MX records and each has a corresponding A record.
So is your question: Ex2K will not route any SMTP traffic, or is it just to some specific addresses?
I have no problems sending to yahoo.com and hotmail.com from my Ex2K server.

I think you mis-read my question. I don't have problems sending email to yahoo.com or hotmail.com. I'm saying, I can't send email to certain addresses from my Exchange 2000 Server, but they worked before on my Exchange 5.5 Server and they work from yahoo.com and hotmail.com. Any ideas?

Sounds like an E2K connector / config issue where DNS records aren't being properly queried by E2K Server (Gateway?)....just my 2 cents.

Good Luck.

Greetings,

There should be two MX records for your domain. One that points to your Exchange server, and another that points to the ISP's mail host.

Cut and paste these links for some great articles on that very subject. I think you'll find a solution to your problem. (REMOVE SPACES from the pasted URL)
