QuarkXPress Problem running on WinXP

By ithink2020 ·
We recently purchased three computers that have XP preinstalled on them. I have install QuarkXPress 4 and updated it to 4.11 using the 4.11 updater and the 4.11 fixit update. I also have the PDF filter installed on the computers as well.

Here is my problem. Sometimes when we open up a document that was created in Quark running on Win2K, quark QPFs. I get an error screesn telling that Quark had an unexpected error. Would you like to send a error report to Microsoft? But if I open it on aWin2k computer, it works fine. It doesn't happen on all of the files that were created under Win2k, but it is to the point where it is not only anoying, but is slowly down the departments productivity.

I have search the net for over 3 hrs. looking for clues. Now I'm just hoping to find someone else who has the problem. I tried disabling the xtensions with no luck. I have also tried to opening the file on a Win2k computer, and copying and pasting everything onto a new document. Still thesame thing happens.

I'm out of ideas and I need help ASAP. If you have had problems seemilar to this in anyway, I open for suggestions. We do not have any Win9x computers or I would try to open the files that we are having problems with on a 9xbox.

Any thoughs would be appreciated!!!

Thank you,

Matt

Robert,
I found how to run Quark in Windows compatibility mode, but it did seem to work. Thank you for your response. If you have any other ideas, please let me hear them. I'm open to try almost anything to get this to work.

Thank you again,
Matt

Robert,

What do you mean by compatibility mode? Have haven't heard of this before. I loged-in myself (I have admin rights on the local computer and the server[where the files are located]) and still had the problem.

Thanks,

Matt

Also:
It happens to every WinXP computer, not just one.

Compatibility mode under WinXP is a way to trick the program into thinking it is running under a different OS than WinXP. In very simplified terms, it is a set of registry entries that get set when you run the program. To set compatibility mode, right-click on the program and select properties. There should be a compatibility tab. You can select different O/S's from the list.

Compatibility mode does not make the environment 100% the same as the O/S you selected. It will also only work for the program you specified. If Quark has multiple executables that get called while you are in the program, you will need to set compatibility mode on all of them to affect the whole program. This would affect you if opening the document calls various executables.

According to Quark's website, Quark 4x is compatible with Win2k. WinXP is built on a Win2k base, so it should work. Quark suggests making sure all drivers on the desktop are updated to make sure they are XP drivers.

One quick thing to try. If Quark allows you to save as into a previous version, say version 4.0, try saving as the previous version and then opening that version on the new machine. For instance, under Microsoft Word 97, I can do a save as and save the file in Word 95 format. Then I can open that format on the new machine. This will eliminate the possibility of it being a version-specific feature causing the problem.

How you get to the version you are running is complicating the problem. Does Quark have a single install that will get you to the right version? If so, I would try that as well.

It helps in situations such as this to simplify the problem. Eliminate all other software and hardware that is not required. This takes work, but is sometimes the only way to figure it out. Try building a base desktop with only WinXP and Quark and see if the problem still exists.

Hope this helps.

I tried saving as a previous version, but with no luck. Quark does not have a single install that I could find. I loaded Quark on a barebones computer and still had the problems.
