Question about Office 365 mailbox after license change and removal

I am moving a client from an E1 license to an E3 license.

I understand how the license changeover is done and have assigned the new E3 license to the client’s mailbox.

My concern is that when I try to reduce the E1 licenses to ZERO, Microsoft’s site informs that this cannot be done and tells me that the subscription needs to be cancelled and offers the following verbage that makes me concerned proceeding MIGHT result in data loss:

When you select Cancel subscription this ‎Office 365 E1‎ subscription will
    be turned off immediately.

You’ll still be able to access information about it here for ‎90‎ days. After
that, all info and customer data for this subscription will be deleted.

Can anyone confirm that as long as the mailboxes have a valid license assigned to them (E3 in my case), and the old E1 subscription is cancelled , that this warning can be disregarded and no mailbox data loss can occur??

What about backups? If anyone is concerned about data loss, wouldn’t they have backups of what they can’t lose?

As to the question, my bet is you’ll lose the email if you cancel or change the subscription. But I don’t work for Microsoft so the answer MUST come from them and no one else.

However, no backup = no data. There are so many other reasons that data can suddenly vanish that I won’t list them here.
