RE DOWNLOAD LINUX RED HAT 7.0

By samuelfisher2000 ·
I downloaded linux 7.0 on my computer and there was some problems, so I loaded Dos 6.22 and ran FDISK and FORMAT on my C drive now I need to reboot and download linux again. I was told I could create a system boot disk from my win98 on my other computer and then download linux. How do I go about this?

The download version of the Linux is an iso format that you have to change it the the correct format through the CD-Rom burning program at the same time, the files are transfered to the CD-Rom. After that you use the CD-Rom as the boot disk to install the Linux.
Therefore, you have to use a computer which can access the Internet, has a CD-RW and has a suitable software to burn and convert the iso files to the CD-Rom.

first ftp back into red hat, and navigate to the directory of the version you downloaded. There is a sub-directory called images, from images you will need to download boot.img. Now you need to go to the directory called dosutils and download rawrite.exe. Rawwrite will let you copy the image file to the floppy, this is a boot floppy that will start your installation process. I will assume you have burned copies of the the cd-rom images to cd, and if not you should consider doing it, as that will make the installation much smoother.

the path for boot.img is
/pub/redhat/linux/6.2/en/os/i386/images/boot.img

the path for rawrite is
/pub/redhat/linux/6.2/en/os/i386/dosutils/rawrite.exe

in that same directory you will find a doc for rawrite, if you are not familiar with this utility I would definitely recommend downloading the doc.

If you are wanting to do a network install, however, you can download bootnet.img, I think that will work and should probably point you to a correct NFS server, I am not 100% sure of this last bit as I have never tried it myself ;-)

Good Luck
Paul
