    Recognize my new modem

    Locked

    by lfhoffg ·

Help! How can I get my Windows 98 PC to recognize my new modem? It’s a Compaq Presario, and I’m having problems with my internal modem, so I am trying to set up an EXTERNAL modem. The OS doesn’t seem to want to recognize its existence.

FIRST, make sure you “New Modem” is good by testing on another machine if possible.
Next you must disable the internal modem, this is usually done through the bios, or by using a jumper on the mother board. THEN install the new modem. If you had previously tried installing the modem with the previous modem “active”, un install all modems using the modems icon in the control panel. Double check that all modems have been removed by looking in the “systems” icon (second tab)
Once all modems havebeen removed, re-boot.
If windows does not detect the modem, go ahead and install the driver manually by using the ADD new hardware icon (in the control panel, use HAVE DISK) Then reboot and go into your bios and check the settings. Don’t use Manual for your system settings, use AUTO. Make certain that your COM ports are ON and not disabled.
If this doesn’t work then I recommend upgrading to Win 98 SE. Finally, try a different cable, make sure you are using a MODEM CABLE.

If you are still having trouble with your modem after 13 months of problems, try this:

      Step 1: Get baseball bat.
Step 2: Swing baseball bat against computer very hard.
Step 3:Swing baseball bat against computer very hard – AGAIN.
Step 4: Go back to step 2.
