Recovering Emails in Exchange After Account is Deleted in AD

By garritya ·

We had an employee leave the company so we deleted his account in Active Directory. We are running Windows SBS 2003 and Exchange 2003. I'm wondering if there is a way to recover the emails for this account. I went into the mailboxed in Exchange and it is still in there but it has a red "X" on it which means it's marked for deletion? Please help!

Easy (if I remember correctly!)

This is from memory as we're on 2007 now but you should be able to check the method if you Google!

Recreate the user's account in AD. Then open Exchange System Manager and click on Tools and open up the Mailbox Recovery Center and select Add Mailbox Store to add the name of the mailbox store that contains the deleted mailbox. Click OK. You should then be able to see the deleted mailbox with its red X. Right-click on the deleted mailbox and select Find Match to start the Exchange Mailbox Matching Wizard. This should pull up the new account that you created and you should be able to relink it.

How to Resolve a Dis-associated mailbox account

Follow the process as documented at

You shouldn't have any issues attaching a user account to that mailbox and getting the mail.

You could also use the Exmerge utility and export the mailbox to a PST. See this article on how to use Exmerge to do a brick-level backup of a mailbox
