recovering file saved over by app

By jeremym18 ·
I was recently using Leech Ftp on a windows me system and I transfered a file from an ftp server to my desktop. I didn't realize that the file had the same name as a file that was on my desktop, a very important file, and it saved right over the file without even a prompt. I was wondering if there was any way to recover the original version of the file, or if it was lost for good. If anyone can help me on this it would be a tremendous help.
Thanks

Hello!

There is a way, but you have to do it QUICKLY. Every second you continue to use your computer, the higher the chance it is gone for good. You have to get your hands on a program such as Norton UnErase which can read the clusters on your hard drive for data. (The Norton version comes in both Utilities and SystemWorks: http://www.symantec.com/product/home-ps.html)

There is also many available that will run from a floppy disk (without an install - this would be MUCH safer for you.) You can find a few of them on download.com, just do a search for "unerse" or "file recovery". I have had quite a bit of luck with Norton's installed (via SystemWorks), you might want to think about it in the future. Let me knw if you have questions! Adrian@isc-unlimited.com
