my laptop died. I took the SSD out and put it in a case. When connected to another PC, all the files are apparently there, but when I try to access the User folder, nothing happens. It says it’s 0 bytes. All the other folders are fine, including the Windows folder and Program Files. This sucks because all the files I actually care about are in My Documents and I can’t access it without my Users folder. Is there anything I can do?

Right click the users folder, go to security, and take ownership 🙂

To get the whole profile you can use USMTGUI offline from EhlerTech.
You can then restore the whole profile to another PC/another user 🙂

As I recall USMTGUI offline is included in the $20 package and upwards.

Taking ownership is a nice idea. Another nice idea to always have a backup on another medium of data you don’t want to lose.

Also remember that Linux doesn’t honor the protection Windows offers. If you boot from a Linux disc of USB-stick (free to make) it sees all your files on the SSd and lets you copy them to some other disk.

Create a bootable disk. Prepare an empty USB.
Boot from the bootable USB. Connect the bootable disk to PC that won’t boot and change your computer boot sequence in BIOS.
Recover data from a hard drive that won’t boot.

There are several options for recovering files from a dead laptop, including:

Try to repair the laptop and retrieve the files from it.

Remove the hard drive from the laptop and connect it to another working computer as an external drive to retrieve the files.

Send the hard drive to a data recovery service for professional help.

Use a bootable USB drive or CD with data recovery software to recover files.

If the laptop is dead, you can try to connect the hard drive to a working computer to recover the files.
