Red Hat 7.0 / freezing problem

By theword ·
Hey, when I am in the Gnome, I sometimes experience freezing. It happens when (say for instance) I am in the control center and I change from one I item to the next.ie(window manager to say to screen saver.) It just could be any combination it seems.
The cursor just stays to the watch icon forever it seems. My Question is this. How do you get out of this condition without having to striking control alt delete.
Is there a way to over-ride this and still stay booted up???
Thanks for your help......Pat

Red Hat 7.0 / freezing problem

CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE Should restart the Xwindow server.

If not. Hit CTRL-ALT-F2, and you'll see a second login screen. (F2-F6 should all work, F1 will be the original screen (F7-12 will be associated... IE F1 & F7 are related. Same with F2 & F8,etc) You should be able to log in, and kill the crashed application.

To kill it, either use TOP, which will show you the running programs, use 'K' and then the PID or better yet, type PS AUX|LESS Find the PID of the crashed application, and kill it.

Any of these solutions should allow you to recover without needing to reboot.

Kev.
