Red Hat, Samba and Win98

By BikerGeek ·
Running Red Hat 6.2, sometimes when a PC tries to access the Samba shared directory, an error message stating "No permission to access resours" pops up and all the machines on the network disappear from Network Neighborhood except for the Samba directory. Reboot the PC and no more message, and the network looks and works fine. Is this a Samba configuration issue (sometimes I have to restart smb as well) or a Winders issue? Any ideas on how to resolve this problem?
Thanks!
Andy

Red Hat, Samba and Win98

by e5z8652 In reply to Red Hat, Samba and Win98

Andy,
It could be either. I have a Win98SE box that occaisionally forgets how to find other machines on the network. Reboot fixes it. If it is something with Win98 hopefully a Windows guru can help out. What are the error messages you get when you run NET USE or NET VIEW from a Win98 DOS window?
If you have to restart smb, it could be a configuration problem - but then it should not be intermittent.
If you are using User level security, I would suggest looking through /etc/samba/smbusers and ensuring that either your Windows user/password combinations are also valid Linux user/passwords for your RH6.2 box, or that the aliases are done correctly. Then look through smb.conf to ensure that the Windows user receiving the error is allowed to access the share in the first place (does it always happen with the same user trying to use the same share?).
If you are using share level security, and 'security' isn't an issue (not critical files) try setting the shares on the RH6.2 box to public = yes and see if your problem goes away.

Hope this helps, just a shot in the dark really.

James

James - thanks for your quick reply. The only times when the 98 boxes lose the network machines is after the error from trying to connect to the Linux box. Of course my PC is working just fine right now, so I can't check NET USE or NET VIEW with thenetwork connections flaking out. I agree about the configuration - it it WERE a Samba config issue, why is it intermittent? Anyway, I have already checked and double-checked smb.conf, smbusers and smbpasswd. Those do not change. If it were a problemwith one of those configs, I would think this would not be an intermittent problem. And I already have public set to yes.

I'm stumped.

Thanks again!
