Some email that I get comes through with boxes of various sizes that have a small red "x" in the upper left corner. You cannot open them at all. Can anyone tell me if this is caused by a setting in Outlook Express or Internet Explorer and if so whatcauses it.

Do you have a virus scanning program? If you do check you setting. You might have the setting to delete them. Your virus checker thinks it contains a virus and it is deleted and you still see the sent to and sender and something the messsage.
Latest versions of Outlook and Outlook Express have built in virus protection and if the box has been 'red x ed' or greyed out and cannot be opened it is usually due to the protection not accepting that part of the e-mail as it saw it as suspicious. You can adjust this by
Open Outlook/ Outlook Express, click on 'Tools' menu click on 'Options' select the 'Security' tab then set the first radio button (the round choice) to 'Internet Zone' then set the second check box (the square one) tobeing empty this is the one called 'Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus'
With this setting activated OE will kill off most attachments. I have seen it kill PDF files, images, and Publisher runtime attachments.
