redhat 4.2 migration to 6.2

By netadmin ·
I am planning to migrate my linux redhat 4.2 server used primarily as an authentication, mail and webserver, to linux redhat 6.2. However, I am relunctant to do this with the thought of some key issues that might possibly be raised during the process. What are the key issues that I have to guard myself against if I migrate into a higher version of linux redhat.

You will find, that because of newer versions of programs, that your config current files will not work. Before you do the upgrade, look at the applications that are important to you, and make sure that you have config files set the way you want them.

Good luck

One suggestion I have is to perform a dual install, thereby keeping your Redhat 4.2 system in tact while doing the upgrade and making sure your new system works properly. This will require enough hard drive room to run two copies of Linux at the same time. However most installations can fit into 1-3G.

I recommend the use of Partition Magic to create enough room for another installation, then perform the install.

If you need more technical details, on how to do this, send an e-mail or post a message, and I can send you some information sources.

Hope this helps.
