Registry key for turning on screen saver

by Joseph Moore In reply to Registry key for turning ...

Here you go:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"ScreenSaveTimeOut"="1800"
"ScreenSaveActive"="1"
"SCRNSAVE.EXE"="C:\\WINNT\\YOUR_SCREENSAVER.SCR"
"ScreenSaverIsSecure"="1"

Ok, so that will turn on the screen saver after 30 mintues (it is in total seconds, so that is why it is set to 1800). The screen saver file to load is specified next; one thing I found out is that the screen saver file name MUST BE IN 8.3 NAMING FORMAT! So, my example is not valid! If your screen saver file is called "C:\WINNT\MY SCREENSAVER.SCR" you would have to write it as "C:\\WINNT\\MYSCRE~1.SCR"
Keep that in mind.

The last entry turns on password protections. Set to 0 to turn off password protection.

hope this helps

Are you having to put the keys in the registry? or just modify the existing keys? If you are creating the keys then they are all 4 of type "String" and the value of scrnsave.exe key is the full path to the *.scr file. If you cannot modify the screensaver in the control panel you might be missing the "DESK.CPL" file from the "C:\WINNT\system32" folder.
Have fun
