Registry/system policy

By msfiroudis ·
Hi,
Does anyone know the registry path to hide the My Computer Icon from the desk top on win95&98 machines. I'm trying to set up a system policy using the system policy editor on a winnt4.0 server. I do not want to remove all the icons from the desk top just my computer icon.Or is it possible to disable the icon.. Thanks in advance

Here's the Registry hack to remove these icons from the desktop. Be sure to backup the registry first.

1. Open the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE) and find

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace

2. Delete the subkeys that represent the icons you want to remove from your desktop.

Refer to the following table to see what each value represents
Icon Name Subkey

Briefcase {85BBD920-42A0-1069-A2E4-08002B30309D}

The Microsoft Network {00028B00-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

3. Close the Registry Editor.

I am a computer teacher at an elementary middle school. I used the policy editor and I had more problems then I wanted to. I am now trying out a program I loaded on each machine called Winlock Pro.

www.winlockpro.com

I believe one of the commands is it will hide the any icon from the desktop.

You can also load winlock pro on to a server and run it for groups.

Hope this helps

Removing the My Computer icon is not possible but there are two options that I can think of. If I remember correctly, poledit can prevent users from using the My Computer icon but you can also hide the icon. To learn how to make the icon invisiblego to

http://www.activewin.com/tips/desk_tips_9.shtml

You will need to make a blank icon image that will replace the current icon image, do this by using MS Paint and creating a 32x32 pixel background with nothing in it (the image will look like a small white square). Go to the menu bar and select Image and then make sure that Draw Opaque is deselected, save the image with the name

blank.ico

Make sure you move the invisible icon to someplace on the screen that nobody will use because if they click on it then it will still work.
