Remote boot Diskless Win9X Workstation s

By stevenm1 ·
have a NT server/Linux environment and need to create a workstation setup for 95
(ALL VERSIONS) and Win98 (also ALL VERSIONS).

The PC's have a NIC card with a 32K boot-Prom installed.

I have gotten the test PC to successfully boot from the network to load DOS 6.22 and
Win95 (in command prompt mode only!).

The PC is a 486-100 on a 3com 3C509B NIC with 32 Meg of ram (real PC's used will be min P-200 with 64 MB ram - this is just a test PC). The NT server is version 4 with SP6a

***Win2k is ***NOT*** an option!!!***
All Linux or NT4 solutions ONLY PLS.

** I need a solution for ALL Win9X Operating Systems (all Ver of 95 and 9

I'm offering all the points I have. Steve M.

If you have successfully booted from the network, then the NIC is working properly. Make sure that the appropriate protocol is loaded. Create a share on the server (ex: \w95_inst) and copy the contents of the Win95 CD to it. Create a login scriptfor the client computer that maps to the directory. From the client, change the directory to the mapped share and run setup.exe. Do the same procedure for any other OS you want to install.

If you are looking to install the OS on a remote computer from the server, then you need to look into SMS (Systems Management Server) for NT or some other solution that provides the ability to do push-installations.

I have only gotten the client to boot up 95 in DOS MODE only. I'm havinbg ALOT of trouble with the remoteboot service config. I have opened a support call to MS and have found NO ONE that knows how the remoteboot service works!

To Stevenm,
I see you reposted the question so i would like to repost my answer too.

Win95/98/NT Wks does not support diskless operation.
On your statement:

Win95 (in command prompt mode only!).
There you go "command prompt only", it is not win95 thats working there, its DOS.

Win95/98/NTWks is a GUI OS which means it runs on a graphical mode with DOS support only for cooperative multi-tasking and assymetrical multi-tasking for multi-app processes.
So there is no solution for what you are trying to do on your diskless workstation.

Respecfully Yours,

Jun

MS says in their documentation that it is supported for win95 (retail version). The client actually thinks there is a C: drive. It actually loads the boot block, io.sys, msdos.sys, and command.com off the server. I have to modify the remoteboot service (which I DESPRATELY trying to get more info about from MS but am stumping ALL of the engineers I ask!) So far it boots osr2's command prompt only because I've replaced alot of defaultly installed files with copies from a osr2 PC. I am going to try running setup.exe from the server at the client to put windows back on the server next. Pls. E-mail me at StevenM@Voicenet.com if you can and I'll provide details.
