By wes.mckinney ·
I need to connect to a remote computer using Remote Desktop for Windows XP and after connecting, Use windows to dial another computer with a modem to access a diagnostic program. When I access the modem and dial, I get disconnected from Remote desktop. Any way to make this work.

You need a different program.

The only way I can think to do this would be to use something like VNC or PCAnywhere to get to the desktop session. You would need to have the correct ports open in your firewall to allow this but you should then be able to run your dial-up app.

Using PCAnyWhere is not an option for my company. I tried using VNC and it did the same thing, disconnected my VPN link.

Remote Desktop to connect to the computer with the modem? When it closes remote desktop, do you get any errors in event viewer?
In AD, check your dial-in and session options on your user object. Im not sure what would be disconnecting.... oh wait, in remote desktop options, uncheck "connect to these devices automatically" options, in particular serial ports... just a shot.
Any other details you can share to give us more to go on?

REMOTE DESKTOP AND DIALUP

by wes.mckinney In reply to Are you using

WE VPN TO OUR CORPORATE NETWORK. WE ACCESS A COMPUTER ON THE NETWORK USING REMOTE DESKTOP. fROM THE REMOTE COMPUTER WE ARE USING WINDOWS DIALUP TO CALL A CUSTOMER'S COMPUTER. WHEN WE USE WINDOWS TO DIAL. WE GET DISCONNECTED FROM OUR CORPORATE NETWORK (WE LOSE THE VPN CONNECTION).I KNOW WINDOWS CAN NOT HANDLE TWO NETWORK CONNECTIONS AT ONE TIME (DIALUP IS CONSIDERED A NETWORK CONNECTION BY WINDOWS). THIS IS WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO SOLVE. MAYBE SETUP A VITUAL COMPUTER ON THE REMOTE COMPUTER SO THAT IT USES A DIFFERENT STACK FOR NETWORK CONNECTIONS.
