Remove Windows 8 Password Using HDD as External?

By t_j_gee ·

My brother recently passed away. He left behind a laptop full of financial information as well as sentimental things (photos, writings, etc.) that none of us can access because it is password locked. I would like to be able to unlock it for his fiancee so she can have access to these things, but because it is a Windows 8 computer, this is a bit over my head.

Is there a way for me to pull the HD and remove/change the Windows password manually by using it as an external drive on my laptop? I know I can just copy the files to my computer, but I'd like her to be able to use his laptop without having to reformat or anything. She's having a hard time, and I don't want to take this piece of him away from her if I don't have to.

Would you be able to describe the password lock screen? Also do you received this lock when you sign-on the laptop?

I believe there are distros of Linux that may allow you to do the operation you are requesting without having to logon into windows so that you extract the data your looking for.

If it is locked by Windows login password, you can remove them by command propmt. If it can't work, you can try Windwos password recovery tool. There are many and you can search on Google
