Removing exchange 5.5 server

We are in the process of removing our bridgehead server from our Exchange 5.5 site. We followed the removal instruction as per the knowledge base article 152959 and 152960. However when we power down the server after removal as per those instructions after some time passes users experience considerable slowness and sometimes no response when opening emails or access outlook. This problem goes away if we bring that server back online even though exchange is not installed.

If anyone has a recommendation please respond.
