Removing Network Neighbourhood

By Achat ·
I have a problem of my nosey users using the Network Neighbourhood from Win 98 Clients to "surf" the network and get into other machines.

Though we have shares existing it is becomming a problem to administer and maintain it.
I would like to know if the network neighbourhood can be disabled on the win 98 client for all users except admin.

The following regedit will hide the "Network Neighborhood" icon. It does not disable it, just makes more difficult to casually browse by double-clicking the icon on the desktop. Users would still be able to browse from the "Run" command, if they arethat savvy.

Note: This would need to be done at each machine.

Under the Microsoft standard key for Software setup:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion,look for: Policies\Explorer and create the key: NoNetHood with value:1.

Assuming that you are using policies, you can disable access to the Network Neighbourhood through the Policy Editor.
