Renewing a Root CA Certificate

I need to renew my Enterprise Root CA certificate on an offline (non-domain) Windows 2012 server with a Subordinate Enterprise CA (domain joined).

There is an option to keep the Public and Private key pairs or to renew them, I know its easier to keep them but I can’t find anywhere what issue this will cause if I do this?

If I renew I have around 50 certificates to do.

I no longer know anyone running that old a version of Windows Server.

Also https://www.reddit.com/r/windowsserver2012/ sees little action recently.
The only good news is that Microsoft extended support to 2026 (see https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-server-2012-r2 )

If you don’t get answers from here or Reddit, it’s time to call it in.
