Replacing NT 4 server with Win2K server

By abbottr ·
I have an existing NT 4.0 server named MIS_SERVER, I want to replace with a Win 2000 server of the same name due to client drive maps and printer connections. If it was NT 4.0 here's what I
would do:
Load NT and name server TEST
Copy data from mis_server to TEST
Promote TEST to PDC
Remove mis_server from network
Rename TEST to mis_server

Will that work for Win 2000 as well???

Replacing NT 4 server with Win2K server

Not Exactly. You can not install a Win2K server as a BDC in an NT4 domain.
Win2K can be installed as a member server, but if you want to run it as a DC you need to upgrade your PDC to Windows2000 and Active Directory.
Also some other bad news. Stay away from the underscore in server names. DNS does not support the underscore in names, and DNS is required for Active Directory.

So I assume my dilema is mute. I need to change the name anyway as I do plan to go to active directory in due time?

1st Do you have all Windows 2000 on the same network? You cannot have two pc's with same name. Also cannot have PDC with active directory, it will replicate data to the rest of the Pdc's.
I would install Win2000Server, named mis_server and then copy all data to it.
put in on network as a member server or file server.

BIG PROBLEM!! SIDS..Each machine name is assigned a unique sid...you cannot change NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 computer names on the fly without a third party utility. Even with that utility in a 2000 domain, it is not recommended on server side. Takea read about the following to see.

http://www.sysinternals.com sidchanger

http://www.powerquest.com NT/2000 sids

http://www.microsoft.com search for sysprep
