Request Timed out on Internet Addresses

by curn29 . Updated 24 years, 11 months ago

Hi

I have and NT 4 Domain with W2K and
Win95 clients. Clients obtain IP, DNS, and Wins settings from the NT4 DHCP
Server.

When I use the ipconfig or winipcfg utilities the clients appear to have
obtained the correct setting but here is the problem:

When I try to ping certain addresses from a command prompt (FQDNs or IP
addresses) I receive a reqest timed out reply. This only happens with some
addresses – eg a ping to www.microsoft.com will return the resolved ip
address and a reply to the ping, but a ping to www.towers.com will again
return a resolved IP address but the request will time out. Internet
Explorer has no problem accessing any address!

The reason this is a problem is a user has been trying to send a mail to a
certain address and the mail keeps coming back with Host unknown (Name
server: abcdefg.com: host not found). I believe the 2 problems are related
(But I could be wrong – I was once before !!)

There is probably a simple explanation for this but a suppose its only
simply when you know the answer.

Thanks and regards

Paul
