Restore Active Directory

By dcooke ·
I am trying to test restoring active directory to a server on my disaster recovery network. The only problem it is a different machine. I have looked on technet for possible solutions but have yet to find anything. I have the server configured exactly like the live domain controller (name, drive config, etc) but it has different hardware and everytime i reboot after restoring the system state i get Inaccessible boot device. Any suggestions

Restore Active Directory

I got the first chance to use active directory restore in anger last friday night, when one of our exchange 'gurus' managed to delete 200 user accounts. The problem you are having is that restoring system state doesn't just restore AD, it restores all of the registry as well - including all of the hardware info ! There is a technet article which you may have seen in your research, Q249694
which outlines a 'KeysNotToRestore' value you can create and tweak in the registry, but we went through the same process as yourself and found it of little use. The only real answer is to get the same spec machines as your DC's for your test, or (as we did) take the time and trouble to manually duplicate your live environment on a test domain. Good Luck....

The previous answer is correct, all hardware ie: scsi controller (your problem) brand/rev is different and will cause a blue screen every time.

You can't do it... You have to have the same hardware specs.
