    Restore Data to new server

    by mex_carnal ·

I need help, I want to restore data from an old server to a new server. The data is written on DLT IV tapes.

The old server is running Window NT Server with Backup Execview 8.1 and in new server running Windows 2000 Server using Veritas Backup 9.1 for Windows Server.

I need to know the steps you go through when restoring data to new server.

This is were it gets complicated the tapes that i will be using works fine if i want to restore/backup data to the old server. ((so data does get written to the tape))…but when i try inserting the dlt tape to the new server…it ejects it after 30 seconds…

Anybody have suggestiong of what i can or links that can be very useful to me. Any answer will be appreciated…

I assume that you are jsut attempting to back up data and not the System State on the Windows 2000 server.

I would advise that you remove the older version, attach the tape drive to the Win 2K server running the later version and back up from there.

Mixing software versions is only going to lead to issues and the vendor is going to tell you to upgrade the version on the NT server.

If the tapes get ejected they aren’t compatible with tape hardware of your new server. What DLT drive are you using on your old server and What DLT drive on your new one? Is the new drive built for DLT IV?

You could try connecting your old drive to the new server and then restoring the data, or you could connect the old server via network to the new server (I suggest a direct network connection, so that no other traffic interferes, you can also shut of antivirus software, that should improve speed and I assume your data was virus checked before it got onto tape.). Now restore the data from your old server to new one via the network.

Just create mapped drives to the new server and restore to the mapped locations. Its likely to be slow if you’ve got loads of data, but simple.
