    Restoring Exchange… HELP!!

    Locked

    by btrue ·

Okay, I have a major problem. We had a system crash a couple days ago. The system was running NT4 SP6, with Exchange 5.5 SP4. We do have a full tape backup of the system. We however, don’t have any special exchange backup utilities. Is it stillpossible to sucsessfully restore?

I haven’t had any luck so far. Have done a full restore and everything except for exchange works. For some reason Exchange just refuses to start and tells me it may be some kind of Windows errer.

At the sametime I have decided to upgrade to Windows 2000 server, which I have already done. It is running great, however Exchange still wont start. I have tried to upgrade to Exchange 2000 in hopes that it would recover everything but it won’t install sinceExchange 5.5 isnt working.

I guess my question is….. I have all the original Exchange data on tape backup… what do I need to do to get this going again? Is it possible to get all my mailboxes back with all their email still inside?

If I understand you correctly you’re saying that you did file level backups of the server, but didn’t do online backups of Exchange ? Exchange keeps its database files open so an ordinary file level backup isn’t any use.

So, unfortunately, you setup is hosed.

      Sorry,

      Rob

Yeah… I think thats what we have figured out. I just assumed the open file add-on for Veritas should take care of this. We are going to look into the Exchange add-on.
