Restoring Outlook Express mails

By KittyM ·
For some reason the mails in my Outlook Express folder have disappeared but my folders are still there. Is there a ways of restoring those emails?

Restoring Outlook Express mails

Your only chance is to use a file recovery tool.

What most likely happened is that the .dbx files for each folder were deleted.

OE uses a compressed file system to store your e-mails.
There is 1 .dbx file for each folder, and an additional file that stores the folder names and arrangement.

If you are VERY lucky, you may be able to recover the older version of each .dbx file using a file recovery tool such as Norton's.

There is an even easier way to recover all your mails from the folder that are there (as you had said). Follow the steps below:

1. If you can identify the folders, copy those folders to a temporary location.
2. Start you outlook express, go to File->Import->Messages. Select "Microsoft Outlook Express 5" from the list. Press "Next", a new window will prompt for the location option, select "Import mail from an OE5 mail directory". Click "Next"
3. Browse to the temporary folder where you had initially stored all the mails.

This will import all the mails off the temporary folder and all the mails will be included in the current outlook profile.

Keep in mind that this procedure will only restore the mails and not the accouts previously configured.

Good Luck
