Roles of an IT MANAGER

by LittleDragon In reply to Roles of an IT MANAGER

It depends on the size of the organization and the type of data center.

In a large mainframe data center, running an IBM MVS operating system, the IT Manager is mostly concerned with Service Levels to users and maintaining sufficient system capacity and staffing for projected growth.

In a smaller company using UNIX or NT based servers as the primary platforms, the IT Manager may have a more technical, hands on role. In really small data centers, the IT Manager may even double as the be the System Administrator or Application Development person!

I would say that the things you asked about, such as planning, organizing, communicating, staffing, leading, controlling, and motivating - these are all pretty classical responsibilities of any manager in any industry.

IT planning means understanding your system capacity and performance so that you can plan for growth and peak processing requirements. It means projecting staffing requirements and dealing with staff schedules, interviewing, performance reviews, etc.

Leadership, motivation and communications are skills that I wish every manager had, but not so many do.

Leadership in IT could mean providing your department with a mission statement and clear service targets. Motivation is about helping your staff understand the goals and how they contribute to them, and rewarding them accordingly.

Hopefully an IT manager does more leading than controlling. Controlling can be about rules and standards that must be followed and with compliance with internal audit or external government requirements.

Hope this helps.

The role of an IT Manager should be to leverage the companies business using the Information Technology. This involves regularly updating the IT infrastructure and controlling it so that it is effectively used in the organisations and its benefits are transferred to the customers.

IT Manager as the hub of IT activities will have to introduce such processes that facilitates the use of IT services and ensures that the services render profitable results for the company.

IT Manager must playall these roles, viz. planning, organizing, communicating, staffing, leading ,controlling, motativing.

IT offers a fast changing environment, and the IT Manager will have to continously make adjustments to the plans and keep accomodating the new technologies that introduce, faster and more reliable services. This will involve careful planning with scalability in mind. Customers will always demand faster and better services and the IT Manager must be on a look out to provide these services. The general management practices will carry along with these things and the IT Manager must remain focused on the customers in terms of the IT deployment. Its the benefits of IT carried to the cutomers that help the business and this is the effective use of IT for any business.
