    Running ESM on Windows XP

    by megtek ·

Hello. I am finding several different articles…some say you CAN run the Exchange Systems Management on XP, some say you CANNOT. Does anyone know for sure if I can or cannot? And if I can…HOW??? 🙂

Windows 2003 Exterprise server running Exchange Enterprise 2003. The workstations are Windows XP SP1, and/or SP2. If the workstations need to be upgraded or downgraded, that would be fine. But who can tell me??? 🙂
    Thank you.

Because Exchange System Manager uses MAPI to obtain dynamic information from the Exchange store, do not install MAPI-based clients, such as Microsoft Outlook, on an Exchange server or workstation running Exchange System Manager. Exchange System Manager uses Mapi32.dll to communicate with the Exchange store. Mapi32.dll represents a core component of the MAPI subsystem and is located in the Winnt\System32 folder. If you install Microsoft Office Outlook 2000 or later on the same computer that contains Exchange System Manager, the MAPI subsystem moves to the Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\NT folder. Typically, Outlook installs a stub version of MAPI in the Winnt\System32 folder, which then routes MAPI calls to the Outlook implementation. If you replace the Exchange Server 2003 version of Mapi32.dll with the Outlook implementation, your system could experience version conflicts in the MAPI subsystem and could cause Exchange System Manager to fail.

So the answer is yes, you can run the ESM on a workstation, as long as, you do not have Outlook on it also. It needs to be a dedicated management console.

This is documented in Chapter 4 of the Exchange Server 2003 technical Reference Guide.

Yes, you can run Exchange tools on a Workstation. If installing Office esp Outlook then make sure you backup existing mapi32.dll to c:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Bin folder to reduce conflicts.

I am using Windows XP, Exchange 2000 and Outlook 2003 with little or no problems.
