Safe messaging

By ozi Eagle ·
I'm under pressure from the family to set up MSN messenger. I don't really want to do this, due to the risk of virus infection. Is there a way to set up Messenger and minimise risks?
I have a business/private network(I work from home), with ADSL access through a modem/router with integral firewall. I run and keep up to date, VET anti virus software.

I don't have much to say about MSN messenger.

We are not having any problems with Trillian.

It is a multi-client messenger and works with most of the other messengers. This way, your family does not need to open up different programs to chat with friends using other messaging applications.

While I find more add and spy-ware on the PC my daughter uses, I believe that these problems come from the web sites she visits, and not Trillian.

I have not observed Trillian opening up an add window or causing any "strange" or security problems.

We use Zone Alarm on the PC with Trillian.
